This morning three people were killed and five were injured when two 18-wheeler trucks were involved in a crash with a pickup truck and a sedan on the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York City.
The accident took place at about 5:45 a.m. on the eastbound side of the highway. According to police, one of the 18-wheelers stopped quickly on the highway, and the pickup truck behind it also stopped. However, another 18-wheeler was immediately behind the pickup and was unable to stop in time and crashed into the pickup and a nearby Toyota Corolla sedan. The Corolla was launched into the air and landed on the center divide of the highway. The pickup truck was trapped underneath the tractor trailer.
Three adult male occupants of the pickup truck were all killed. Two other occupants of the pickup truck were reportedly taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious condition. Two other people suffered minor injuries, though it is unclear what vehicle they were in.
The drivers of both 18-wheelers were not injured in the wreck.
All lanes of the Expressway were shut down as a result of the accident. Local news reported delays of 80 minutes in the area.
