Company Tests First Self-Driving Truck

A San Francisco-based start up company coordinated with Budweiser and Volvo last week to introduce its self-driving truck technology. The company set up a beer delivery on October 20th from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs – about 120 miles.

The trucks still apparently require drivers to load the vehicle up and drive out to the highway. Once the trucks hit the highway, the automated driving system takes over. Of course, the driver stays behind the wheel in the case of an emergency.

The start up company, Otto, is owned by Uber. Their goal is to spread self-driving systems throughout the nation in an effort to make highway travel much safer by removing the human factor behind the wheel. Although the technology isn’t perfected yet, it removes the potential for truck accidents caused by driver inattention or lack of rest.
