The driver of an SUV was killed Friday afternoon after crashing into the back of an 18-wheeler truck.
Anthony Maisto, 64, was driving on Interstate 95 in Laurel, Maryland when he ran into the back of a parked tractor trailer. The large truck had stopped on the side of the highway near Route 216 after becoming disabled, just a few feet away from the inside lane of the highway.
According to the Maryland State Police, Maisto had to be extracted from his vehicle. He was transported to a shock trauma center at a nearby hospital, where he later died.
The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. Factors likely to be examined may be the rate of speed of Maisto’s SUV just before the wreck, in addition to whether Maisto maintained proper control of his vehicle. Also likely to be examined may be whether the driver of the 18-wheeler followed proper protocols in taking care of their disabled truck.
The driver and passenger of the tractor-trailer were not injured in the crash. All northbound lanes of I-95 were closed for about 30 minutes after the wreck.
