An unidentified 56-year-old man was killed Tuesday afternoon after his motorcycle was struck by an 18-wheeler truck.
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place at the intersection of US Highway 50-Northwester Pike and Va. 259. near Winchester, Virginia. Odilon Reyes, 58, was reportedly driving a 2016 Freightliner 18-wheeler on 259, but could not stop as 259 intersected Highway 50. Reyes crossed both lanes of Highway 50 and struck the motorcycle.
The truck then clipped a 2013 Nissan Altima, and turned over on its side on the shoulder of Highway 50. The driver of the Altima was uninjured, and the car did not have major damage.
The motorcycle driver later passed away from internal injuries after being transported to Winchester Medical Center.
Police charged Reyes with reckless driving. Reyes claimed that the brakes on his truck had failed, and the Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit of the Virginia State Police is currently inspecting the truck to see if any equipment failure occurred.
Highway 50 was shut down for about half an hour as cleanup and investigation was underway.
