One Killed in Explosive Crash with 18-Wheeler

A driver was killed Wednesday evening after their car was hit into the path of an oncoming 18-wheeler truck.

The crash took place west of McGregor, Texas on Highway 84 at Burkett Lane.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a woman driving a Kia hit a Honda Civic from behind as the Civic was trying to turn. The Honda was then sent into oncoming traffic right into the path of the 18-wheeler.

The impact between the Civic and semi truck caused a fiery explosion that completely swallowed the Civic in flames. The driver’s body was burned so extensively that authorities have not been able to identify whether they were male or female. DNA testing will be required to determine the identity of the driver, and may take several weeks.

The driver of the Kia was injured in the accident, and was transported via ambulance to Coryell Memorial Hospital in stable condition. DPS officials stated that charges would be filed against her, though the severity of those charges will be based on an official investigation. It is not yet clear what exactly caused her to strike the Honda, whether it was inattention, distraction, sunlight, or any other contributing factor.

Highway 84 was shut down in both directions for several hours.
