A crash in central Pennsylvania killed three people and shut down an Interstate Highway for over 8 hours.
The crash occurred when a southbound dump truck, driven by Michael Smatlak, 42, crossed over the median of the road and ran into an 18-wheeler being driven by James Hawkins, Jr. A pickup truck driven by Terry Danner then hit both of these two vehicles. The wreck took place on Interstate 81, near the town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Police believe that the accident started when a tire on the dump truck blew out.
Hawkins, Jr. was declared deceased at the scene of the accident. Smatlak and Danner were both flown to a nearby hospital via helicopter, but died after being transported.
