Gerald Thomas Archuleta, 32, was killed Monday night in a crash involving an 18-wheeler truck. Archuleta worked at the South Conejos School District in Antonito, Colorado as a sixth grade teacher and coach.
The wreck took place at about 8:30 p.m. on the Colorado 112 Highway when, according to the Colorado State Patrol, an 18-wheeler ran a stop sign and ran into a Dodge Dart sedan in which Archuleta was a passenger.
The driver of the Dart, Stephanie Dawn Archuleta, 32, was moderately injured and transported to the Rio Grande Hospital for treatment. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Barker Gwyn Jackson, 61, was also sent to the hospital for minor injuries.
State Patrol Officers stated that alcohol didn’t seem to be a factor in the crash, and that all parties were using their seatbelts. Speed was also not a factor. Reports have not indicated what exactly caused Jackson to run the stop sign at the intersection.
