According to police out of Jackson, Mississippi, 40-year-old Calvin Gatlin was killed Tuesday when his 18-wheeler truck crashed into a bridge.
The cause of the wreck is unknown at this point, but the damage to the truck was catastrophic, as the cab of the truck was split in two around a bridge pillar. The accident occurred on Interstate 55 South at the Fortification Bridge, as the large truck seemed to veer off the right side of the road, past a guardrail, and straight into the pillar.
Emergency responders from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality were also on the scene, as diesel fuel and engine oil leaked out of the truck and onto the road and a nearby ditch.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. Due to cleanup of the accident and a subsequent investigation, traffic in both directions on I-55 was delayed significantly.
