The driver of an 18-wheeler truck is lucky to be alive after a bizarre incident unfolded.
On Tuesday morning at about 10 a.m., a big rig driven by Matthew Black, 31, slammed into the abutement of a bridge on Route 15 in Frederick, Maryland after grinding against a guardrail on the north side of the road. The high force of impact tore the cab from the trailer portion of the truck, and the cab went airborne and eventually landed down the side of an embankment.
After the cab was separated, the trailer portion of the truck continued along the overpass before eventually coming to a rest.
The driver, who was wearing his seatbelt, was flown to a shock trauma treatment center in nearby Baltimore, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Officials with the Maryland State Police are investigating whether Black had fallen asleep at the wheel just before the crash.
In the picture below, the red cab can be seen just below the highway overpass, with the trailer on top of the overpass.
