An unidentified 45-year-old man from Texas was killed late Thursday night in a wreck involving two 18-wheelers.
The crash occurred on US Highway 287, north of Eads, Colorado, just before midnight. According to the Colorado State Patrol, the man was driving a 2015 Dodge Ram pickup truck southbound on the highway, when he passed a 2005 Peterbilt 18-wheeler. After completing the pass, he reentered the northbound lane and hit a 2007 Freightliner 18-wheeler head-on.
The Freightliner was immediately engulfed in flames and drifted over to the shoulder of the road. The Dodge pickup was subsequently struck again by the Peterbilt truck, and was tossed and rolled along the highway.
The driver of the Dodge was declared dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Freightliner truck were sent to a nearby hospital for their injuries. The driver, Bahta Wibshet, from Dallas, was seriously injured. The passenger, Terekegn Abera, from Las Vegas, reportedly suffered less substantial injuries.
The crash still remains under investigation, and the highway was closed for almost 9 hours as cleanup and investigation was underway.
