Two 18-wheeler trucks crashed early Thursday morning, causing a catastrophic injury that shut down an entire interstate for about 5 hours.
The wreck took place in Hanover, Virginia on Interstate 95. According to reports, an 18-wheeler that was hauling aluminum had slowed down for a work zone. That 18-wheeler was then struck from behind by a different 18-wheeler that was carrying lumber.
The high force of impact from the collision caused the cab of the first truck to disconnect from its trailer.
The driver and passenger on the first 18-wheeler were both seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance. The driver of the second truck remained on the scene, and was not reported as being injured.
Due to the severity of the crash, fuel was spilled on the road, and required an environmental team to report to the scene for clean-up efforts.
All four lanes of the highway were shut down due to the large size of the scene of the wreck. In order to get through the scene drivers were forced to use the shoulder of the road to proceed forward.
