On Monday night just two nights before Halloween, a four-car crash in southeast Dallas ended in tragedy. A man who was said to be driving under the influence caused the deadly crash that took two lives, one of the victims unidentified, the other 43-year-old Lashun Russel. Russel’s daughter was ejected from the vehicle and rushed to Children’s Medical Center.
According to police and news reports, a man in a black Ford pickup was traveling in a westbound direction on Military Parkway when he ran a red light and plowed into a Honda, causing the Honda to spin before crashing into a Chevy Trailblazer and a Taurus. The victims who lost their lives were both occupants of the Taurus, which was ultimately slammed into a utility pole after the accident.
The driver of the Ford pickup allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot after causing the accident; however witnesses said that as he tried to run, a Good Samaritan caught the suspect and restrained him until police arrived.
The man who caused the accident, 34-year-old Leodegario Hernandez Juarez, was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication.
This story is tragic, and should open up our eyes to the dangers of driving after consuming alcohol. While Juarez will likely be placed behind bars for a very long time, families have lost their loved ones. As Dallas personal injury attorneys, we know that although Juarez will spend time in prison, surviving family members may wish to file a wrongful death lawsuit. While no amount of money can ever replace the loss of a loved one, it can help with lost income, funeral and burial costs and other financial burdens.
