A reverend and his wife were killed in a car crash Tuesday evening in Logan Township, Pennsylvania. Rev. Jerry Hayward, 50, and his wife, Kathleen Hayward, 59, were driving their 2009 Chevrolet HHR on Osgood Drive, when they were they were hit head-on by another driver.
The other driver, James McCleary, 30, was driving a Jeep Cherokee in the opposite direction on Osgood Drive. According to police and witness reports, McCleary lost control of his Jeep and began to straddle the concrete median while fishtailing. The Jeep then rolled several times and slammed straight into the front of the Haywards’ vehicle. It then flew into the air and landed on the hood of a Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Jennifer Kuhns, 44.
Rev. Hayward was pronounced dead at the scene while Mrs. Hayward died after being transported to the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center – Altoona. McCleary reportedly suffered moderate injuries. Kuhns and her teenage son were also taken to UPMC – Altoona.
Police, with the help of accident reconstructionists, are still investigating the cause(s) of the accident. They are considering all factors in this crash, though they already believe it likely that McCleary was speeding.
