A truck driver was tragically killed Wednesday evening after two big rig trucks collided on an Ulster, New York highway.
The driver, Vernon W. Bigelow, 47, from St. Albans, Vermont was killed after his 18-wheeler truck rear-ended another 18-wheeler as both were traveling north on the Thruway in Ulster, New York. The other truck was driven by Alex Calle-Cardenas, 28.
Reports stated that Bigelow lost control of his truck after striking Calle-Cardenas’ truck, and then went off of the road and into the center median where it set on fire. Bigelow died at the scene of the accident.
Calle-Cardenas stated that his neck and back had been injured in the wreck, but refused transport to an area hospital, according to police.
Investigators have not yet determined exactly why Bigelow rear-ended Calle-Cardenas’ truck in the first place.
The northbound lanes of the Thruway were closed for about 9 hours while emergency officials extinguished the flames and cleaned up the area.
