Four Deaths Reported in Icy New Years Eve Conditions in Dallas

Four people died overnight on New Years Eve in the Dallas area in three different crashes involving frigid conditions, according to the Dallas police department.

The first accident took place just after midnight on I-35 East, just south of Dallas. An unidentified male driver in a 2013 Hyundai sedan was driving south in the northbound lane when he crashed into another man in a Ford Expedition SUV. The wrong-way driver died at the scene, while the driver of the Ford Expedition passed after being transported to the hospital.

In a second crash at about 5:20 a.m., a driver in a Dodge Challenger was killed after they hit a curb and then crashed into a light pole while navigating a curve in the road. This driver has not yet been identified.

The third car crash took place when a car struck another stopped vehicle at another accident scene. According to police, the driver of a 1993 Toyota Corolla struck the median wall of a highway and ended up in the shoulder and inside lane of the road. While another driver stopped to help at the scene, a Chevy Malibu crashed into the two stopped vehicles, killing the driver of the Corolla and injuring the good Samaritan. An off-duty firefighter who also stopped to assist at the original scene was thankfully able to jump over the median wall and avoid being hit by the Malibu.

This crash took place on LBJ Freeway between Hillcrest and Coit roads, at about 5:25 a.m. Police have not stated whether they intend to charge the driver of the Chevy Malibu with negligent homicide.
