A man out of Tyler, Texas was pulled out of his flaming pickup truck following a car wreck that took place Christmas morning.
Darrus Evans, 46, was driving his pickup truck on US Highway 69 at about 1 a.m. when he was struck by an 18-wheeler. According to police, the wreck started when a separate vehicle had first pulled in front of the large truck, causing that driver to swerve in an evasive action and strike Evans. The separate vehicle did not stay on the scene of the accident.
Immediately following the collision, Evans’ pickup was pinned underneath the 18-wheeler and was on fire. When emergency personnel arrived on the scene, Evans was at first unresponsive and was stuck in his vehicle. Emergency responders fought the fire with handheld fire extinguishers and were able to control it long enough to pull Evans from his vehicle.
Tyler Fire Department personnel were eventually able to put out the flames, and Evans received medical aid onsite. He was later taken to East Texas Medical Center with serious but not life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured in the accident.
