The entire northbound portion of Interstate 85 near Townville, South Carolina was shut down this morning after a tanker truck flipped and leaked hazardous materials.
The crash initially took place after two passenger vehicles crashed on the highway, causing the unidentified driver of a tanker truck to try to evade the crash at the last minute. The tanker instead crashed and rolled over on the highway, spilling a portion of flammable resin on the roadway.
Fire officials estimated it would take about 6-8 hours to clean up the wreck, and that the northbound lanes of the highway would be closed down.
The two drivers of the passenger vehicles were sent to hospitals for treatment, though the severity of their injuries was not known. The truck driver was trapped inside his tanker directly after the crash.
