In a case study of the danger 18-wheelers pose to the general public when proper safety measures are not taken, an unattended truck was involved in a highway crash after it rolled down a hill and into a busy highway.
The crash took place on Interstate 95 in Stamford, Connecticut on Monday afternoon. Police stated that the 18-wheeler was parked in a parking lot in a roadside plaza when the driver left the truck’s cab and went into a nearby building.
Because the emergency brakes were improperly engaged, the truck slowly started to roll down the hill and onto I-95. The truck smashed through a guardrail and into a car before it stopped at the barrier separating the northbound and southbound roadways.
Another wreck took place in the aftermath, as a box truck driver swerved to avoid the 18-wheeler and ran into a van. Reports did not indicate whether any of the drivers in the 3 occupied vehicles were injured.
The truck driver was given a citation by police for leaving a motor vehicle on the highway without properly setting the emergency brakes.
