6 people were killed and 10 injured this morning when a school bus veered out of its lane and struck multiple vehicles, including a transit bus. The crash took place in southwest Baltimore, Maryland.
According to police, the school bus was heading east on Frederick Avenue around 7 a.m. when it first struck the rear of a gray Ford Mustang. The bus then struck a cement pillar, and then continued down the road for a block before it crashed into the front driver’s side of the transit bus.
Both bus drivers were killed, along with 4 passengers on the passenger bus. There were no students aboard the bus during the wreck. The names of the deceased have not yet been released by police. The school bus driver was a 67-year-old man, and the transit bus driver was a 33-year-old woman. The passengers that died were a 51-year-old man, a 51-year-old woman, a 46-year-old woman, and a man believed to be about 32.
Several others were injured in the wreck, including an aide aboard the school bus, the driver of the Ford Mustang, and 8 passengers on the transit bus. Five of these victims were taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. One was in critical condition, one was in serious condition, and the other three were in stable condition, according to the Chief of Trauma Dr. Deborah Stein.
Baltimore Police, along with the National Transportation Safety Board, are currently conducting an investigation of the wreck. Police stated that they found no skid marks on the path of the school bus, and there are no signs that the school bus had used its brakes directly before the collision. They are looking to question the injured school bus aide about what happened right before the crash. Records also show that the deceased school bus driver had a good driving record.
